Sharpen your skills at community journalism and prepare for the next step in your career.
The Big Timber Pioneer seeks a reporter who has the skills and savvy to work in a small community writing news and features and understands the importance of complementing stories with photography. The successful applicant knows AP style and is skilled at interviewing and assisting people in telling stories of their lives here in Big Timber and Sweet Grass County. A journalism degree is helpful but experience in writing for a newspaper is crucial.
The Pioneer is an award-winning 1,450 paid circulation weekly newspaper and member of Montana's largest community newspaper group, Yellowstone Communications. We cover a diverse rural community that spans some 1,800 square miles of Montana, so don't expect to spend hours on the phone nor on the Internet.
Both the Crazy Mountains and the Absaroka Beartooth Wilderness are in Sweet Grass County and offer abundant hiking, fishing and camping. The Yellowstone and Boulder rivers flow through Big Timber and provide excellent trout water. Yellowstone National Park is about an hour away.
This is an opportunity where you will do a little of everything in a collaborative environment and learn how to manage a weekly newspaper in the process. Yellowstone Newspapers offers a fun and challenging environment in which to grow professionally as a journalist and a leader.
