The salary range for this classification is $4,104 to $6,795 per month. Starting salary may be set as high as $6,667 per month based on education, skills and experience.
Office of Public Affairs
Full-time temporary position to May 31, 2019 with no permanent status granted. Temporary assignments may expire prior to the ending date.
The campus seeks broad news coverage highlighting excellence in higher education - including faculty engagement in the fields of the arts, business, health, trade and tourism, science, engineering and more. Content must parlay into domestic and international news, politics and public policy and global commentary. The senior writer must survey a wide range of sources to propose topics to the editorial team each week, and then distill large amounts of information into sharp, succinct press announcements and digital content.
The Senior Writer is responsible for developing storylines, writing and editing press announcements and digital content for distribution to news outlets, trade publications, online websites, blogs and over social media ecosystems. The senior writer must survey a wide range of sources to help develop content topics with the editorial team each week. He or she must be able to spot news pegs in academic topics and research and then present the information in a conversational, cohesive manner to help it reach a broader audience through press announcements and digital content. The position will also be called upon to ¿pitch¿ stories to key news media.
Knowledge, Skills & Abilities
California State University, Long Beach is looking for a skilled, nimble writer with a strong news background to write regular content and press announcements that secure features in print, broadcast and online outlets. The ideal candidate can write quickly, accurately and creatively about a broad array of topics -- with at least five years of experience covering news and politics. The candidate must be fearless with the execution of new and old technologies including Press Page, Cision, social media channels and more.
The ideal applicant is a self-starting avid news consumer who can study and adapt to CSULB¿s voice and style, write accurate, engaging, concise copy with little editing. Versatility, creativity, and adaptability, namely, an ability to work under pressure and changing priorities, are critical.
Ability to communicate with an ethnically and culturally diverse campus community. Ability to follow all university policies, procedures, and guidelines including but not limited to safety, civility, information security, and non-discrimination policies and procedures. Ability to contribute to a positive university experience for each and every student, and assist in achieving the university's commitment to a "vision of excellence."
Education and Experience
Equivalent to a bachelor's degree in a related field and four years of related professional experience required. Five years of experience covering news and politics preferred.
