The Beaumont (Texas) Enterprise, a Hearst newspaper, seeks a versatile writer/editor to direct entertainment and nightlife coverage for its weekly magazine and daily website, cat5.
The 24-page all-color tab, with in-paper and separate distribution, covers the thriving creative side of Southeast Texas – dining and drinking, music, art, popular culture and trends – in a smart, provocative way more typical of alternative papers than dailies. Thecat5.com is complemented by a robust social media presence, including Facebook, Twitter and Instagram.
The successful candidate should be self-starting and motivating, uber-organized, creative and flexible. She or he should have a confident writing voice and a non-routine approach to ideas, content and presentation in the face of constant deadlines. Planning is super critical because of an advance production schedule. Photography and multimedia skills are a big plus. Besides writing bylined and non-bylined pieces of varying length each week and running the website and social media, the editor directs a group of freelance writers and photographers. cat5 is a high-profile pacesetter in the area’s entertainment upswing, and the editor is expected to become immersed in the scene.
Southeast Texas is undergoing a wide-ranging cultural renewal with farm-to-table eateries, craft breweries, underground theater and a growing art and DIY music presence. Beaumont is less than 90 miles east of Houston and four hours from New Orleans. For the right candidate, the blend of cultures, underground art, music and food scene will make for an incredible adventure.
Send a short note, resume, references and three writing samples (electronic files or web links) to Editor Timothy M. Kelly at tkelly@BeaumontEnterprise.com. Please use the subject line “cat5 Editor: Your Name.”
