The Ark, a nationally award-winning weekly newspaper serving the communities of Tiburon, Belvedere and Strawberry in the San Francisco Bay Area, is seeking talented freelance writers to contribute soft features to our five regular special sections. The Generosity and Home special sections are each produced twice per year, respectively alternating in January, April, June and September, while our Holiday Guide is published in November.
Our hyperlocal articles are multisourced, typically run 800-1,200 words and are assigned with significant lead time. Assignments also typically originate from our special sections editor, though pitches are welcome. There may also be opportunities to contribute features or general assignment stories to our primary weekly edition.
This is an ongoing freelance, nonstaff, independent-contract role paid monthly by assignment and performed outside The Ark’s office, with most communication with the editor by phone and email. However, the nature of the stories will require — require! — in-person and often in-home and on-the-job interviews with our local residents here on the Tiburon Peninsula, so you should live within a reasonable travel distance. Phone calls and emails with sources should be restricted to arranging in-person interviews and for follow-up details.
Please send a standard resume and a cover letter detailing relevant experience to firstname.lastname@example.org. Include PDFs or links to three specific samples of published work. After a review of materials, we may ask candidates to complete a short assignment for an assessment of unedited work.
