Dally, a community news stream, is looking for a full-time reporter. Based in Sheridan, Wyoming, Dally provides real-time community news for free. Our philosophy is people shouldn’t have to pay to know what’s going on in their community. We’re proving to the dead-tree, subscription-based publications there’s a better way to do community news in today’s new-media environment.
We’re seeking someone who is, above all else, passionate about community news. You like getting to know people around town and can spot a good feature a mile away. You don’t mind working some nights and weekends to attend community events and public meetings. You’re great with a camera, and you can shoot some video too.
We don’t compromise on accuracy and honesty, and we keep our personal opinions out of the issues. Beyond that, we’re not like a traditional newspaper. If you’re a veteran reporter who wants to do things the way they’ve always been done, it’s going to be a bad fit. We don’t think outside the box. We start by throwing the box away.
You’re also going to need to be able to work independently. It’s a small newsroom, and there won’t be someone there to hand you assignments. You need to keep on top of the community, cultivate relationships with sources, and have solid news judgment. You need to pinpoint not only what’s most important to cover, but also what is the best use of your limited time. Maturity, organization, and reliability are paramount.
A bachelor’s degree in journalism or related field is attractive, but a large amount of recent journalism experience with the clips to prove it is sometimes as good as J-school.
We do offer a competitive salary. No really, we do.
Also, check out our companion site in Gillette for a good idea of where we’re going.
Interested candidates should send a cover letter, five samples of their best writing, and three photos to firstname.lastname@example.org. In the subject line write “***SHERIDAN REPORTER POSITION”. If you have links to some videos you’ve done, include them in the cover letter. If you have questions, feel free to call 701-641-6603.
