Description

The San Antonio Express-News is looking for a food and drink writer to join its award-winning Taste team.

In San Antonio, the nation's seventh largest city, the food scene is thriving, with new restaurants and craft cocktail bars opening nearly every week. With the national attention the city's dining and drinking scene has received, we need a writer who is passionate and knowledgeable about food and drinks to keep readers in the know.

Texas, too, is fast becoming a player in the wine world, and many wineries and vineyards fall in our coverage area. San Antonio is host to a booming craft beer and distillery industry, with top bartenders calling this city home. It's also the base for a number of nationally recognized restaurants and the location for a Culinary Institute of America campus. This is a beat that easily leads to Page One food and drink stories during the week and on Sundays. Our food coverage is a major traffic driver to our websites and a big reason readers subscribe and look forward to the Sunday newspaper.

Our ideal candidate has a thirst for good stories. You must approach social media, blogging and auxiliary online-only videos and features as second nature. You should have a sense of urgency about getting news out fast and first, and should have a severe intolerance for getting beat. You should be well-organized and a strong communicator, with a proven record of identifying and developing deeply reported trend pieces about food and drinks.

Above all, our ideal candidate is driven, passionate, curious and deeply engaged. We want both a strong reporter adept at building sources and a graceful writer who can describe for readers why food and drinks matter.

Experience writing about food and drinks is required, as is a real gusto for cooking, dining and drinking. A developed palate that can distinguish craft from commercial and cabernet from syrah is a bonus. An adventurous eater eager to try everything at least once is preferred, as is someone who understands why both fine dining options and casual hole-in-the-walls are important to a community and neighborhood.

If you're eager to contribute to a team that works hard, but loves having fun while it does, and in a city that is always hungry for what the Express-News team will publish next, then email your clips, links, cover letter and resume to Features Editor Emily Spicer at espicer@express-news.net.

Meanwhile, Express-News' food coverage can be found at http://www.expressnews.com/food/ and http://www.mysanantonio.com/food/
