The night managing editor serving the Pioneer Valley in western Massachusetts plays a key role in the news operations of the Daily Hampshire Gazette, Greenfield Recorder and Athol Daily News. The position is a supervisory role, overseeing a handful of editors and reporters and ensuring that stories, photos, headlines and web posts get a careful final read before going out into the world. It is based in the Northampton newsroom of the Daily Hampshire Gazette, founded in 1786, and a winner of the New England Newspaper & Press Association’s “New England Newspaper of the Year.”

We seek a journalist with excellent news judgment and a solid knowledge of libel law. The qualified candidate must have excellent editing, writing and copywriting skills, including knowledge of AP style. The night managing editor must also have strong interpersonal skills and show an ability to work with and inspire a range of reporters and editors with different levels of experience. A background in investigative reporting and public records requests is a plus.

This position requires the ability to design pages, as the night managing editor is part of a seven-member shared desk team charged with building pages for all three publications. It also requires working knowledge of content management systems, familiarity with digital best practices, and experience producing stories for the web and social media.

This is a valued position within our news organization and is a rare opportunity for the right candidate to head a newsroom in the evening when important decisions need to be made. The position is a great career opportunity for future advancement in the field of journalism, both in print and online.

The Daily Hampshire Gazette, Greenfield Recorder and Athol Daily News are owned by Newspapers of New England, a family-run company with a commitment to serious community journalism. We offer competitive pay, paid vacation and personal days and benefits, including optional health insurance, dental coverage and a 401K retirement plan. We are an equal opportunity employer.
