Evergreen Newspapers is seeking a part-time, 20-hour per week news reporter to cover the Evergreen/Conifer area. The position will cover news and features, including education stories.

Position purpose:
• Cover news and feature stories in Evergreen, Conifer and surrounding areas for weekly papers and daily website posting.
• Government/official beats include Elk Creek Fire, Evergreen Fire, chambers of commerce and Evergreen Park & Recreation District.
• Shoot photos as needed for stories and stand-alone art.
• Help coordinate assigning photos to photo editor and freelancers.
• Plan coverage and coordinate schedule with editors.

Essential functions:
• Gather information from sources, records and observations for stories.
• Write and post live news to websites; populate websites with full content weekly.
• Coordinate photo images for stories by taking pics, assigning to photo editor or arranging freelance.
• Meeting weekly story deadlines.

• Bachelor’s degree in journalism or related field, with preferred professional experience covering government, breaking news and features.

Physical requirements and conditions:
• Reliable transportation is needed. Reporting may require hiking to remote locations for fires and other breaking news.

Success dimensions:
• A successful employee in this position will combine strong writing skills, empathetic interviewing and diligent reporting, as well as some photography skills and Web acumen. The ability to work on tight deadlines is also critical, as well as working effectively with editors to improve stories.
