Governing Staff Writer

Governing tells the vital stories of state and local government – the innovations, challenges, people and policy that are shaping America’s statehouses and city halls.

We’re hiring a general assignment reporter to join our growing editorial team.

We want someone with sharp reporting and writing skills, the ability to generate and pitch enterprise story ideas, and a knack for nurturing sources. You will work closely with the editors to continue to make our monthly print magazine and our website the go-to sources for news and analysis on state and local government.

The ideal candidate is a self-starter with at least 5-8 years covering public-sector news and issues.

Responsibilities include:

-- Reporting and writing 3-5 online news stories a week
-- Writing longform features for monthly print magazine
-- Traveling, on occasion, to report a story on the ground
-- Conceiving and developing story ideas for the magazine and web
-- A commitment to nonpartisan reporting and writing
-- Ability to represent Governing in media appearances and at events

We need a strong writer with great news judgment, someone who can balance multiple deadlines and be an active contributor to our editorial team. Hopefully, that’s you!

Please submit a cover letter and resume, along with at least 5 writing samples, to Nadine Davis at
