Richmond BizSense, an online daily business news publication in Richmond, Va., has an opening for a 9-month, paid internship that could, based on performance, lead to a full-time reporting gig.

The position is designed for recent graduates who have reported for their college newspapers or rookie reporters 1-2 years in looking for a new opportunity to get daily beat reporting experience. A general knowledge of business, economics, finance or investing is helpful but not required. A curiosity for those topics and excellent writing skills are required. Interns will work side-by-side with the editor to learn how to report, write and edit stories for a savvy web audience. Enthusiasm for all assignments and a strong work ethic are required.

Interns are treated as staff writers and expected to handle a wide range of responsibilities, including covering breaking news, developing sources and writing hard news/feature/lifestyle stories. Interns are also expected to pitch ideas, develop leads, take photos and edit copy when needed.

The position begins after Labor Day 2018 and ends just prior to Memorial Day 2019. You’ll write 8-10 stories per week and will finish the term with a strong portfolio of clips and a taste of what it's like to be a beat reporter. If you show the right energy level and can survive getting thrown into the fire, a full-time spot on our staff could be an option at the end of the intership.

Work environment:

BizSense, along with our sister site in Denver, Colorado, combines the energy of a young, entrepreneurial company and a digital-only business model with the sense of purpose that comes from knowing that the community needs well-presented and useful business news coverage. Richmond is a fantastic place to report, with everything from startups to Fortune 500 companies. We’re energized about our 11-year-old company and enjoy covering a healthy, engaged local business community. We take special pleasure in regularly scooping the incumbent local newspaper and like candidates who have a competitive streak.

To apply, send resume, 5 clips exhibiting a range of stories (with an emphasis on hard news) and cover letter to michael@richmondbizsense.com. Deadline for applications is July 6.
