Position Overview
Stateline seeks an enthusiastic reporter to pursue groundbreaking in-depth features and investigative work on state policy matters. This position, based in Washington, D.C., is part of a team of writers and editors who cover trends and key developments for Stateline, with an emphasis on how different states are grappling with the same challenges and broad trends that might be invisible to readers in individual states. The writer is responsible for conceiving, reporting and writing stories that are compelling, thorough and analytical. We're looking for someone who enjoys working with a team, wants to develop as a journalist and is eager to help fill the gaps in important state policy coverage. It is anticipated that the individual in this position will travel regularly within the U.S. Women and minorities are encouraged to apply. Stateline is an independent online news outlet funded by The Pew Charitable Trusts.

Requirements
• Bachelor's degree required.
• Minimum of four years practical writing experience.
• Track record of producing accurate content and analytical articles on tight deadlines. Clear, effective writing style.
• Excellent interviewing skills, grammar and command of AP style required.
• Understanding of state and federal government.
• Ability to use social media to promote individual stories and boost Stateline's readership.
• Ability to think strategically and creatively, juggle multiple priorities, adjust to changing circumstances, organize time efficiently, stay attentive to details, and identify resources for projects.
• Capacity to fit into a creative, fast-paced, and highly professional corporate culture which emphasizes excellence, collegiality and teamwork. Accustomed to working as a member of a team and individually to meet goals.

 

Travel
It is anticipated that the individual in this position will travel regularly within the U.S.
