Community newspaper editors

We are seeking two community-minded journalists to help cover, define and present the news to a dynamic and active readership in western and northern Sonoma County. Our news team is small and spunky, and we cover topics as wide-ranging as city hall, natural resources, community festivals, homelessness, cannabis and crime. The positions include print and digital presentation and copy editing, plus regular news beat assignments covering schools, government and community activities.

We post daily to our websites and social media and we publish four print newspapers every Thursday. The company also produces a variety of special sections, which often involve news staff support. Visit to find out about our family of publications.

The small communities we serve are energetic, engaged and diverse, and an editor who works for us has the opportunity to refine and enhance their editing, layout, reporting and interviewing skills, while covering a variety of topics and styles — from hard news to feature articles. In addition to print and digital presentation, our editors have front page bylines every week, and our papers regularly win awards for our work.

Our two new editors will become familiar with print layout using QuarkXPress, digital posting using the TownNews content management system and regular social media postings and community interaction. Experience in print and digital presentation is helpful, but not as important as an eagerness to learn.

This is a hands-on position that requires proven capability in diverse areas of news gathering, presentation and community interaction. The positions are 30 hours a week to start (depending on the candidate) and include the opportunity to write the first draft of history.

We are a family owned business. We work hard, laugh frequently and are obsessed with accurate, brave and timely journalism. One of our reporters describes our company as “family-friendly, cynical-yet-hopeful and fond of baked goods.”

We are embracing a new vision, to reimagine how community journalism works in our communities. We launched a direct public offer ( that is gaining traction in the communities we serve. While we have always been a “reader-powered newsroom” we are approaching that concept in a more deliberate manner and will be testing new ways to involve and engage our communities in our work.

To apply, send us a resumé, cover letter and published clips of your work. Tell us about your print and digital presentation skills (or your learning curve) and convey your passion for community news. We look forward to hearing from you.
