D.C. transit blogger/columnist

Express, The Washington Post’s free commuter daily newspaper, is looking for a high-energy columnist/blogger/consumer reporter to be the voice and driving force behind our transit-focused DC Rider project. The right person will be an experienced reporter skilled at getting answers and writing under tight deadlines and should know Washington’s public transit system intimately. Experience with transit or community-based reporting is a plus.

The ideal candidate will cover the Metro riding population the way a good beat reporter covers a community. This job isn’t about reporting on the bureaucracy of Metro as an agency; it’s about covering the people who use the system daily. This person will work to build a social media community and to engage with riders through various social media platforms and through our DC Rider app.

Candidates should be passionate about public transit and understand the unique challenges Washington’s transit-riding population faces. We’re looking for someone who will write with voice, passion, empathy and wit — along with an eye for offbeat, entertaining and human stories. You need to be highly attuned to the travails of long-suffering riders, but you’ll be expected to approach them constructively, with the mindset of a dogged consumer reporter determined to make things better, not just add to the griping.

Your writing will appear in Express in print, online, possibly in the form of a newsletter, and within the DC Rider app. The job may also entail representing DC Rider on panels, radio and other platforms, and it could involve staging Metro-related events.

We are a small, hardworking and highly collaborative group and are looking for someone who will bring energy, creativity and humor to this new position. To apply, please send a cover letter, resume, salary expectations and five writing samples to workatexpress@washpost.com.
