Life & Culture Reporter

PA Media Group, publisher of and The Patriot-News, is seeking a Pittsburgh-based Life & Culture reporter who can write, shoot video and who is comfortable on camera and social media.

The reporter is responsible for covering western Pennsylvania stories that will be of interest across Pennsylvania. The beat can encompass everything from the recent flooding, to Uber’s self-driving cars, to a list of the city’s coolest hotels. Check out our “This Is Pittsburgh” Facebook page for a taste of this wide-ranging reporting position.

You would join a Life & Culture team with reporters in Philadelphia and Harrisburg to provide a statewide approach to coverage. The job requires a self-starter who can operate independently and as part of a team. There is no office. You will work on scene, writing from home, a coffee shop or library.

A proven track record of reporting, writing, photography, video and social skills are required. You must be familiar with spotting trends through formats such as CrowdTangle and Google Trends, and you should know your way around Google Analytics. Your schedule would be based on events, so nights and weekends will be a regular part of this job. You may be covering fans at a Steelers game or the Dirty Dozen run. A large part of this job is producing stories – in various formats – that highlight the uniqueness of Pennsylvania and, especially, western Pennsylvania.

  • BA in Journalism, Communications, or related field
  • Minimum of three years' experience in Journalism, including reporting and editing
  • Experience with social media, including Facebook Live.
  • Experience shooting video and with editing software.
  • Solid understanding of news writing, journalistic standards and story structure
  • Ability to communicate clearly and professionally at all times with colleagues at locations around the state
  • Ability to accurately handle multiple simultaneous activities on tight deadlines

Our Life & Culture team has replaced the old features department. We are not in the preview/review mode of newspapers. We want unique stories that generate audience and resonate across the state. PennLive is among the largest news websites in the state with nearly 5 million unique visitors a month. But its more than just numbers. You would be joining a Pulitzer Prize winning newsroom that is positioned for the future. Our focus is on developing a real-time approach to reporting news, sports and entertainment content.
