Position Summary

The Pueblo Chieftain, Southern Colorado’s award-winning daily newspaper, has an opening for a versatile, experienced, News Editor.

The incumbent will be responsible for newsroom production at night including; selecting Associated Press and other wire stories; working with page designers to produce pages; being the final gatekeeper for all pages and paginating pages as needed.

The News Editor oversees all news pages, making final adjustments and sending edited and completed pages to pre-press, which in turn sends them through to the plate-making process.

The position will supervise and manage page designers and graphic artists, and work in cooperation with the Night City Editor to coordinate news coverage and decide appropriate news story placement on pages.

The News Editor will work a night shift, typically from 2:30pm – 11:30pm. The Editor also may fill in on various desks during vacations and other times off. Those desks include, but are not limited to; the business desk and the Night City Editor desk.

The ideal candidate for this position will have several years of experience at a daily newspaper, with that experience including copy editing, pagination and supervision of employees. The ability to navigate through wire stories and prepare them for publication is vital.
