GateHouse Iowa, a group of newspapers in central Iowa, is seeking staff to help us in our mission to continue growing and getting better in the ever evolving news industry.

We are the Ames Tribune, Boone News-Republican, Story City Herald, Nevada Journal, Tri-County Times, Perry Chief and Dallas County News. We are a company that believes in thinking big and doing big things as we strive to connect and engage with our readers.

We are a team of reporters who collaborate and work together to provide the stories our readers want, the stories that impact our readers, their neighbors and the communities where they live.

We are looking for reporters who have the ability to tell a story differently and who can expand beyond just meeting coverage and explain to readers how a decision made by their elected officials will affect them and their families. We shoot a lot of our own photos, so you must have a good eye and a willingness to learn. We also shoot a lot of video as another way to tell a story online and through social media.

We have a growing presence in the digital world and we’re looking at expanding that presence even more.

We’re looking for photographers who know the power a photo can have and how that photo alone can tell a story. Our staff shoots photos that include everything from local community events and festivals, portraits of people in our communities we’re writing about, and high school and Big 12 college sports.

We’re looking for page designers who aren’t afraid to look at things differently, beyond the traditional templates of design, and who know how to make a story or image jump off the page. They must work closely with our reporting staff and photographers and not be afraid to push the envelope of creativity. They also are our last set of eyes on a page before it goes to press, so an eagle’s eye for typos and grammatical mistakes is key.

No matter the position, we’re looking for staff that takes the initiative, is aggressive about pursuing the stories in our communities that no one else is telling, and isn’t afraid to bring new ideas to the table.

Interested, qualified candidates should submit samples of their work, a resume and cover letter explaining what you will do to help take us to the next level, to Editor Michael Crumb at mcrumb@amestrib.com. No phone calls please.

Applicants for reporting positions should submit up to five writing samples and examples of photography and video work. Applicants for photography and page design positions should submit portfolios of their work.
