The Virginian-Pilot is looking for strong, flexible, creative reporters eager to experiment with news gathering and storytelling for a team that will be at the forefront of day-to-day innovation as we grow our digital audience.

This team will have a relentless dedication to reader interests, pursuing the impact stories our audience wants and needs. Reporters may cover a spot news story; use Facebook Live to feature an event; write about a trend; collaborate with a beat reporter; pursue an enterprise idea; and more. For a few months at a time, reporters will cover “obsession beats,” taking brief, deep dives into topics of great interest to our readers.

The reporters should be news junkies with proven reporting and writing skills. They should be able to work under pressure, take direction well and love finding people with stories to tell. They should be comfortable covering a variety of topics and be able to quickly pivot from an enterprise story to breaking news and back again.

This team will not be confined to traditional newsroom thinking – news vs. features, hard news vs. soft news. Nor will it be confined to traditional storytelling. Photo, audio, video, live-streaming, lists, online quizzes and social media are just some of the tools this team will use, depending on the story and situation.

This team will start early and publish online during the hours our audience is paying the most attention. The reporters are expected to have different schedules.

Please include a resume, cover letter and five samples of your work with your application.
