The Basin Republican Rustler, a community weekly in the spectacular Big Horn Basin of Northwest Wyoming, has an immediate opening for a lead reporter/news editor to help write and produce our hometown paper. This has been a very stable job in a fine community. We're a family owned newspaper.

We’re looking for a versatile journalist who can report and edit hard news and general community topics, handle a camera, cover local sports, edit copy and help lay out a broadsheet weekly. We need someone with the right touch to help produce our small-town paper. Tight-knit staff.

This is a perfect step up for a reporter with some experience who wants to put his or her mark on a strong community weekly and/or learn journalism in the great incubator that is a community newspaper.

Our paper has a rich tradition of journalism. You'll take the lead of a small-town paper, supported by our family network of award-winning Big Horn County newspapers in Greybull and Lovell. Great opportunity for growth.

A working knowledge of layout and design is important. Pagination skills a plus. But reporting and productive writing is paramount.

Basin is located in Wyoming’s Big Horn Basin at the doorstep of the beautiful Big Horn Mountains, with bountiful recreation opportunities minutes away. You can work and play in an area that is great for camping, hiking, fishing, hunting, exploring and photography. You can get up on a weekend morning and be standing on Fishing Bridge in Yellowstone or hiking a trail in the Big Horns before noon, heading to a mountain lake or the Cloud Peak Wilderness. Billings, Mont., is two hours to the north, the stunning Bighorn Canyon National Recreation area is less than an hour to the north and the college town of Powell is about an hour to the northwest, with fun Cody just beyond Powell.

Basin is a small but active community with lots of things happening; it’s the Big Horn County seat. Great location with Wyoming’s mildest weather plus boundless recreation and a fantastic quality of life. You must appreciate life in a small western town with friendly folks but no Starbucks or Wal-Mart in town. What you will really enjoy is being engaged in a small community where people love their newspaper.

Competitive salary in the $27,000-$32,000 range, depending on experience and ability.
