The Virginian-Pilot is looking for a reporter to join a new team focused on consumer news. It will cover local retail, openings and closings, consumer advocacy, trends, and the emerging maker economy with deeper dives into consumer culture. This team will be the authority on the next big thing coming to the region as well as the places and experiences readers want to spend their money on.


We are looking for a hustler who can break news quickly but can also develop in-depth stories. The ability to recognize and build audiences through data, social media and sourcing is essential, as is creating multimedia packages. Experience in writing consumer news would be a plus but not necessary. A history of developing and owning a beat is more important.



Essential Functions

  • Writes compellingly, precisely and accurately
  • Meets deadlines
  • Produces a regular mix of stories, including breaking news and features.
  • Produces multimedia reports, including photos and videos.
  • Collaborates with reporters and editors throughout the newspaper on stories and story brainstorming.
  • Travel for news coverage as required.
  • Writes in-depth explanatory and investigative articles involving data and Freedom of Information requests.

Basic Qualifications

  • Track record of urgency in reporting and writing.
  • Proven record of developing sources.
  • Precision and clarity in writing, with ability to present complicated information in a way that engages readers.
  • Mastery of social media and the ability to build audiences.
  • Ability to shoot video and build multimedia packages.
  • Proven ability to work well in a team setting.
  • Ability to locate and use data to inform stories.
  • Track record of uncompromising accuracy
  • Proven ability to meet deadline and manage time.


Preferred Qualifications

  • 1-3 years reporting experience at daily newspaper




Monday- Friday 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. Some nights and weekends as required.
