Description:

The Fort Collins Coloradoan, part of the USA TODAY Network, is seeking a high-energy, social-savvy full-time breaking news reporter to join its award-winning team.

We’re looking for a candidate who knows how to ask great questions, dig for stories and move quickly. The successful candidate has a passion for news of the day and answering the following questions: What are people talking about? What does this news mean for our community? How can I make sure this story gets in front of the right audience?

Multiplatform fluency is a must: This position will extend beyond the written word into rapid video production, shooting photos, managing and encouraging discussion in Facebook groups, and posting timely updates on site and various social media platforms.

Social media should serve as a primary source and outlet for your work -- be that questions in Facebook groups or on Twitter or through analytics programs such as CrowdTangle. Other sources include police and court records, press releases, scanner traffic, reader and staff news tips, etc.

In this position, you will act as a public ambassador through community outreach, and will be expected to connect with readers -- through social media, on camera and in person through live events.

The right candidate will have a degree in journalism or a similar field and one to two years of professional journalism experience. He or she will also embrace the digital focus of our publication, be able to work independently and on deadline, and have ideas about how to connect stories to larger discussions about big issues: identity, infrastructure, equity, poverty, Fort Collins history and the future of our growing community.

What to expect at The Coloradoan? A newsroom that regularly challenges the status quo – from its early adoption of emerging storytelling technologies like chatbots to its law-changing investigative reports – and a supportive, fun-loving team.

Your role:

- Be the on-scene reporter at breaking news events, providing timely updates, photos and videos.
- Lead the Coloradoan's transportation coverage, including everything from trains to toll roads to the transportation and infrastructure of our future.
- Use social media to form story ideas, responding to questions, fostering discussion and moving quickly to produce breaking news stories and updates.
- Use metrics programs -- CrowdTangle, Chartbeat and Omniture -- to help form story ideas and inform reporting.

This hourly position does require the reporter to work nights and weekends and occasional holidays. Candidates must have a valid driver’s license with a good driving record, proof of insurance and their own transportation. The reporter will uphold the highest standards of integrity and credibility.
