22nd Century Media, a growing company that publishes 15 community newspapers and websites, has an immediate opening in its SouthWest office for a sports editor with a passion and talent for local sports and news.  

The sports editor is responsible for leading the development of award-winning, weekly sports sections within two publications, The Orland Park Prairie and The Tinley Junction. This is an excellent opportunity for someone interested in working in an entrepreneurial, creative and fast-paced environment. This position includes a comprehensive benefits program.

Responsibilities include:

- Planning sports sections that include game reports, features, regular items and more; 

- Reporting on and photographing local sporting events;

- Compiling regular content items, like a sports roundup, schedule, and news and notes; and

- Working well with a team of editors and freelancers, who are assigned weekly work.

Qualifications:

The ideal candidate for this position will be detail-oriented, a team player, energetic and creative. Excellent communication and interpersonal skills required. Should be proficient in Microsoft Suite and Adobe InCopy. Copy-editing skills with a vast knowledge of AP Style and grammar are a must. Previous experience working in a newsroom is preferred, not required.

A four-year journalism degree from an accredited college or university is necessary.
