SUMMARY OF POSITION  

The Reporter will join a team of journalists who will craft, execute and test a news prototype for a startup news organization. Our team is focused on quality, speed and precision, and creative storytelling techniques in everything we do and every member has a huge impact on furthering the company’s mission to engage and enlighten an urban, diverse Millennial-age audience in a meaningful and truthful way. The Reporter reports to the Managing Editor and creates news stories covering trends, features, informational, social conscious, and breaking news in written, audio and video formats. The Reporter should be well versed in backpack and digital journalism, broadcast and newscast processes and equipment, and trust standards of journalism. The Reporter should have impeccable news judgement, a nose for timely events, a knack for developing engaging stories with original and new methods of storytelling, and excel in a fast-paced, collaborative team environment.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES

The Reporter will assist in building a foundation of news, by creating original news stories in writing, audio, and visual mediums; gathering information for news stories using beat sources, contacts and leads; delivering newscasts, demonstrating energy, confidence, professional appearance and voice quality; and using new storytelling techniques, combining video, audio and graphics to tell the story effectively. The Reporter will participate in daily news meetings, pitch story ideas, and conduct in-depth reporting and complete assignments within assigned deadlines; collaborate with the entire news team, departments and community sources; and participate in the testing and analytics process of the prototype. The Reporter will be responsible for representing Company in a professional manner and learning and executing the Company’s research and branding to deliver dynamic and unfolding newscasts that hold audience and regularly surpasses the market competition.

 

QUALIFICATIONS

Education/Training:
 

  • The skills and knowledge that comes with the completion of a Bachelor’s degree in a related field, such as journalism, communications or English.
     

Related Experience: 

  • 3 to 7 years of professional experience in digital news reporting with written, audio, and visual mediums
  • Excellent writing, editing, and storytelling skills to complete digital journalism in written, audio, and visual mediums
  • Proficient at using journalist backpack equipment and digital audio editing software to record and finalize content
  • Monitors sources for breaking news, e.g., wires and social media
  • Demonstrated excellence at discerning, planning, writing, editing, and voicing own news stories for an assigned newscast or news series
  • Demonstrated strong knowledge in current events, consumer trends, economics, and political news
  • Maintains crucial deadlines in order to provide news stories in a timely fashion
  • Demonstrated experience building contacts and sources within the assigned community
  • Demonstrated experience reporting within assigned deadlines and at live reports
  • Demonstrated excellence at combining video, audio and graphics to tell a story effectively
  • Demonstrated experience representing Employers/Clients in a professional manner
  • Experience establishing a community presence outside of the news organization
  • Performs other duties as assigned

 

Additional Job Requirements: 

  • Requires valid driver’s license and insurance
  • Requires AV journalist backpack equipment
  • Must be willing and able to work flexible hours, under tight deadline pressure, including breaking news, including weekends and overnights. Must be able to work additional hours with little or no notice if needed.
  • Must be able to work and travel throughout the Greater Los Angeles area and willing to travel out-of-area travel if required.

 

Knowledge/Skills/Abilities:  

  • Excellent communication, writing, editing, and voicing skills; proficient in grammar, in American English
  • Pleasant, charismatic and well-controlled voice; excellent pronunciation
  • Well-rounded communication skills for conducting interviews
  • Excels in working both independently and collaboratively in a team environment
  • Ability to work comfortably with people from different creative and technical disciplines 
  • Strong sense of urgency, ability to problem solve, manage details and projects while responding to changing priorities and feedback
  • Ability to multi-task and prioritize assignments
  • Ability to identify technical equipment and resource requirements for recording interviews and other audio material.
  • Proficient in media production and broadcast systems
  • Supervision/mentoring Eagerness to tackle big problems that have unknown solutions at the outset
  • Bilingual English/Spanish, a plus

CONTRACT

  • 6 Month Contract. Rate is a fixed weekly fee.
