The Assistant Editor will join a team of journalists who will craft, execute and test a news prototype for a startup news organization. Our team is focused on quality, speed and precision, and creative storytelling techniques in everything we do and every member has a huge impact on furthering the company’s mission to engage and enlighten an urban, diverse Millennial-age audience in a meaningful and truthful way. The Assistant Editor reports to the Managing Editor and should maintain an editing department that enables the reporters and curators to devote their time and energy to reporting, writing and/or curating news content. This editor should be well versed in digital journalism, have impeccable news judgement and a nose for timely events, a knack for developing engaging stories with original and new methods of storytelling, and excel in a fast-paced, collaborative team environment.


The Assistant Editor will work closely with all levels of the news department to craft and implement news programs, processes, standards, and metrics. The Assistant Editor will craft article ideas, edit and assist in fact checking work from reporters and curators before posting daily content to the website; take notes during budget meetings and the editing process; manage editorial workflow activities, reports and paperwork; interface with all departments and external vendors; participate in the testing and analytics process of the prototype; and whatever else is needed to keep the department running smoothly.



  • The skills and knowledge that comes with the completion of a Bachelor’s degree in a related field, such as journalism, communications or English.

Related Experience: 

  • 3 to 7 years of professional reporting or editing experience
  • Strong analytical, research, idea crafting, writing, editing, fact checking skills in American English
  • Impeccable journalism ethics and standards, including on writing and repurposing content
  • Superb on-time task completion, organizing skills and attention to detail, even under deadline
  • Excels at developing and maintaining editorial processes, workflows, and content file structures
  • Ability to read and interpret website analytics
  • Basic digital video editing skills, such as iMovie, Final Cut Pro or equivalent
  • Proficient in Microsoft Word and Excel, as well as cloud-based editing and workflow programs and CMS
  • Demonstrated social media editing and blogging
  • Demonstrated participation in survey writing and user/usability testing
  • Enthusiastically works in a fast paced, deadline driven environment


Additional Job Requirements: 

  • Requires valid driver’s license and insurance
  • Must be willing and able to work flexible hours, under tight deadline pressure, including breaking news, including weekends and overnights. Must be able to work additional hours with little or no notice if needed.
  • Must be able to work and travel throughout the Greater Los Angeles area and willing to travel out-of-area travel if required.

  • Repackage content from producers and field reporters for newscasts, a plus
  • Supervision or management experience, a plus
  • Use of a journalist backpack kit, a plus
  • Bilingual English/Spanish, a plus

  • 6 Month Contract. Rate is a fixed weekly fee.
