The West Virginia University Reed College of Media and Daily Athenaeum seek a dynamic and innovative Digital Media Advisor to serve in a Teaching Assistant Professor position to support instruction in journalism and advise student media staff at the Daily Athenaeum (WVU’s independent student-run newspaper) and U92-FM college radio station. The successful candidate will have extensive knowledge of digital media, and its use in news gathering, reporting and audience development. 

This position will teach undergraduate courses in Introduction to Media Writing; and will manage, develop and coordinate the course  across sections and with adjunct instructors to ensure consistency and effectiveness in course instruction. This position will teach, advise and mentor students in various capacities and roles at the Daily Athenaeum and U92-FM. This includes using social media to drive reader and listener engagement, promote advertising, build website traffic and optimize content. The ideal candidate will understand the difference between social media platforms and how to use each to increase audiences for both digital and print products; create workflow for social media; use analytics and other metrics to measure audience response; use digital platforms to break news and interact with users; and write, produce and upload digital news content.  

This is a 12 month position and will begin July 1, 2018.

The successful candidate must have:

  • Master’s degree in Journalism, Media Studies, Communications or a related relevant field. 
  • Ideal candidates will also have at least three years of relevant experience working in a digital-first newsroom or media outlet, significant experience with all major social media platforms, and a thorough understanding of analytic strategy. 
  • Collegiate-level teaching experience is preferred.
