Newsweek is looking for a breaking news editor who is obsessed with
politics, world news, U.S. news, social media and being first while
getting it right. This person is a news junkie who stays up late when
needed to catch viral Twitter debates, election results and whatever
happens on late-night TV. The ideal candidate can keep us ahead of the
news cycle and thrive in a fast-paced environment. They are concerned
if a breaking news story comes in five minutes late. They pore over
analytics the same way they dig into a writer’s raw copy, always
looking for ways to make improvements. This position reports directly
to the News Director. The job is based in New York City.

Responsibilities:

· Edit and publish briefs and enterprise stories each day

· Manage and train a large team of breaking news reporters and
managers. Must have experience managing a team of hard-news writers,
building morale, growing audience and/or breaking news

· Track developing and ongoing stories while editing and responding to
Slack messages

· Coordinate with other Newsweek verticals to ensure quality content

· Track analytics and SEO best practices for team every day

· Plan and produce reported stories, but also know when to aggregate
something in 30 minutes or less

-Write headlines that are accurate but never dull

Desired Skills/Basic Qualifications:

· Minimum 5 years of experience in a professional newsroom

· Editorial understanding and experience covering news stories in
innovative ways, including stories focused on: the White House,
elections, civil rights, housing, state government, immigration and/or
weird trends.

· Polished writing and editing skills

· Social media experience

· SEO skills

· High standards of editorial integrity

· Ambitious, accurate and resourceful

· Must be comfortable multi-tasking and prioritizing assignments

· Must be willing to work flexible hours under tight deadlines

· Authorization to work in the U.S. is mandatory
