Description:

Good Media Group is the home of GOOD (good.is) and Upworthy (upworthy.com). We’re a mission-driven media company that reaches 200MM+ people per month, largely through social media. We create stories that are both meaningful and shareable, strategically designing them to have the strongest chance of engaging millions of people on issues and conversations that matter.

About you as the Trending Editor:

You’re fast. You’re obsessed with pop culture and trending news. You have incredible instincts for how the internet will respond to important conversations of the moment and believe that together we can move that conversation in a direction that makes the world a better place. You know how to take advantage of those moments as they come.

You’re an experienced editor, a talented, creative storyteller, and a strong manager. You’re ambitious, competitive (in a friendly way), and accountable. You provide great feedback and guidance, are invested in helping writers grow, and thrive on teamwork. You have a knack for hunting down stories that will drive meaningful engagement through creative, original social packaging — with an uncompromising eye for stamping out clickbait.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Manage a team of 6+ staff writers as well as select contributors
  • Edit the majority of Upworthy and GOOD’s quick-turn, trending stories each day, focusing on story framing and maintaining brand voice
  • Assign and approve pitches for stories that align with our editorial mission and have massive audience appeal
  • Mentor and advocate on behalf of writers to senior leadership
  • Work across social and multimedia teams to develop a healthy mix of engaging content

Required:

  • 3+ years experience as an editor and manager in a digital media environment
  • Cultural awareness and  ability to navigate sensitive topics on a deadline
  • Knows how to leverage data and traffic needs to inform editorial output
  • Experience with breaking news and quick-turnaround publishing, as well as comfort editing longer and feature pieces
  • Familiarity with headline writing and social optimization

Preferred:

  • Experience managing remote teams
  • Newsroom background

Additional Considerations:

  • We highly value all aspects of diversity. Candidates from diverse backgrounds are encouraged to apply.

What You'll Get:

Good Media Group is committed to supporting our staff, offering a competitive benefits package including equity in the company, a 401(k) plan as well as medical, dental, and vision plans, and more. And you should know that Good Media Group is committed to building a diverse, inclusive, and equitable organization.
