The senior editor for community news is responsible for all aspects of the Houston HCN daily and weekly Editorial digital and print products, including content, packaging, budget and the editors, producers, reporters and photographers who work with program. The goal of this editor is to ensure the HCN digital and print products are timely, relevant and increase readership on all platforms. In addition, the senior editor will work closely with the metro editor and metro department to more closely align the community news report with the Houston Chronicle.


  • Serve as the day-to-day newsroom leader for all HCN newspapers and websites.
  • Direct 21 weekly and two biweekly newspapers through regional editors at six suburban locations.
  • Direct the print and digital production effort, ensuring print editions are produced on time, in budget and with proper quality control.
  • Develop program to grow digital and print audience with resources available and recommend options for further growth.
  • Serve as primary recruiter and hiring manager for the HCN editorial program, ensuring a stable of qualified candidates is consistently available.
  • Provide executive leadership support for the editor of the daily Courier of Montgomery County.
  • Adhere to Chronicle standards for locally produced content and community content in all platforms.
  • Ensure content is updated, timely and attractive to readers ever day
  • Coach editors as needed daily and through regular performance evaluations.
  • Coordinate social media presence for region.
  • Schedule and conduct staff editors weekly meeting.
  • Approve time and attendance for staff.
  • Serve as the HCN reader representative.
  • Work with leaders in Advertising, Marketing, Circulation and Production on program planning.
  • Collaborate with Houston Chronicle digital and print editors regularly, assisting with breaking news as needed or requested.
  • Work in the weekend city editor rotation at the Houston Chronicle main building as requested.

Reporting relationships

Reports directly to the Houston Chronicle Media Group executive editor or managing editor, to be determined.
