Description:

Open Markets Institute (OMI) is looking for a an experienced journalist with a good familiarity with food and farming systems to help us document how corporate concentration can harm the wellbeing of farmers, ranchers, food chain workers, animals, the environment, and the end consumer. The ideal candidate will have excellent writing and editing skills, an excellent understanding of business and economic issues, and some familiarity with antitrust policy. Comfort serving as an expert on these issues, including speaking to other reporters, is a big plus. The job requires some travel. General responsibilities include:

 

1. Manage and publish Food & Power, a first-of-its-kind website and newsletter tracking consolidation in the food and agriculture industry. Specific responsibilities include (40%):

  • Writing a weekly reported newsletter for F&P subscribers;
  • Overseeing and managing the mailing list for the F&P newsletter;
  • Back-end management for the F&P website including technical fixes, upgrades, and hosting;
  • Regular updating of a database on mergers and acquisitions in the food and agricultural sectors;
  • Writing and updating static explainer pages that provide background on food industry consolidation.

 

2.  Maintain OMI’s relationships with food and agriculture advocacy groups (30%):

  • Serve as resident expert on food industry consolidation on behalf of OMI;
  • Help educate policymakers on concentration in food and farming systems.

 

3. Produce medium and long-form reporting on consolidation and corporate power in the food and agriculture industry. Responsibilities include (20%):

  • Generating ideas and pitches for reported articles;
  • Placing articles in magazines, online, and in print;
  • Promoting work through radio interviews and other media.

 

4. Assist with OMI events, projects, papers, articles, and research, including those not related to food and agriculture. (10%)

 

Preferred Qualifications:

  • 3 years journalism experience.
  • Experience and expertise reporting on business, and economic policy.
  • Awareness of and interest in corporate power, concentration, and inequality.
  • Willingness to be a 'team player' and take on necessary tasks and responsibilities as required by the Open Markets team.
  • Attention to detail, including strong proofreading and editing skills.
