Description:

Open Markets Institute is looking for an experienced journalist with an excellent understanding of business and economic issues to cover and explain the effects of concentration in specific sectors of the U.S. economy. Initially this will include a strong focus on the food and farming sectors, but it also will include the tech, communications, health care, and transportation sectors. The ideal candidate will have excellent reporting, writing, and editing skills, and some basic familiarity with antitrust policy and history. Comfort serving as an expert on these issues, including speaking to other reporters, is a big plus. The job requires some travel. Basic responsibilities include:

 

1. Report on and research stories relating to concentration, consolidation, and monopolization in the food and agriculture and other sectors for two OMI newsletters: The Corner and Food & Power (F&P). Responsibilities include (40%):

  • Contributing shorter pieces to The Corner, a weekly newsletter about consolidation and monopoly produced by OMI;
  • Contributing reported pieces to F&P, a first of its kind website tracking consolidation in food and agriculture;
  • Overseeing and managing the production and emailing of the F&P newsletter and the F&P website;
  • Writing and updating static explainer pages for the Open Markets and F&P websites that provide background on food industry consolidation;
  • Helping build a database on mergers and acquisitions in the food and agriculture sectors.

 

2. Produce medium and long-form reporting on consolidation and corporate power in various sectors including, but not limited to: food and agriculture, web platforms, regional inequality and economic development, healthcare and pharmaceuticals, transportation, and energy. Responsibilities include (30%):

  • Generating ideas and pitches for reported articles;
  • Placing articles in magazines, online, and in print;
  • Promoting work through radio interviews and other media.

 

3. Help maintain OMI’s relationships with key advocacy groups, and serve as a resident expert on behalf of OMI on issues related to concentration, including educating journalists and policymakers. (20%)

 

4. As needed, assist OMI with program-wide events and specific projects, papers, articles, and research. (10%)

 

Preferred Qualifications:

  • 4 years journalism experience.
  • Experience and expertise reporting on business and economic policy.
  • Awareness of and interest in corporate power, concentration, and inequality.
  • Willingness to be a 'team player' and take on necessary tasks and responsibilities as required by the Open Markets team.
  • Attention to detail, including strong proofreading and editing skills.
