The Examiner, based in Independence Missouri, is looking for a hands-on, visible leader that can grow print and digital audience and engagement while managing other functional areas of the business. Our business model is to be the preeminent provider of local content and advertising in the small and midsize markets we serve.

  • Directs the newsroom operation, focused on the presentation and production of the news report in print and online
  • Active with the management team in developing and implementing the newspaper’s strategies and tactics
  • Supervise or perform daily tasks as needed, including planning, story assignments, editing, layout, page makeup and assuring deadlines are met
  • Communicate with readers, answering questions and providing information
  • Oversee website and all digital growth strategies
  • Work with staff to effectively manage coverage of news, human interest and sports in the market
  • Oversee news hole, content flow and deadlines
  • Design or assist with pages for special sections as needed
  • Assure the newspaper is meeting its responsibility as a public watchdog through in-depth reporting
  • Write editorials and stories as needed; produce photography and videos as needed
  • Work closely with upper management team, including advertising, circulation, production and the business office
  • Represent the newspaper at public functions
  • Coordinate usage of stringers and features as needed within budget
  • Conduct regular staff meetings and coordinate professional development training for staffers
  • Oversee the processing of expense forms, purchase orders and other paperwork as needed
  • Adhere to journalistic standards and assure reporting is balanced and objective
  • Adhere to Inner Circle requirements and implement Gatehouse Media initiatives as needed

Required qualifications: College degree preferred, experience in newsroom management

Skills and abilities: Good communication skills, ability to handle deadline pressure and high stress work environment. Thorough knowledge of newspaper editing standards, to include knowledge of AP style. Good organizational skills. Ability to get along well with others - maintain a positive, professional and helpful behavior/attitude to customers, sources, peers, staff and supervisor. High level of integrity and good judgment required in order to maintain objectivity, balance and well-rounded content for reader engagement.

Physical demands/other requirements: Required to have a valid driver’s license, clean driving record, reliable transportation and provide proof of auto insurance.
