Description:

Two-year residency

The Chicago Tribune is seeking a two-year general-assignment reporting resident for the metro desk, a year of which is spent on our overnight desk. Residents are an integral part of the editorial department, both city and suburban, doing the same quality work and receiving the same medical benefits as other members of the staff.

This is not a training program. We look for experienced, talented, working daily journalists who seek the opportunity for professional growth in a large metropolitan market. Ideal candidates are well-rounded reporters and graceful writers. We look for resourceful self-starters who can report and write deftly in a deadline environment and aggressively pursue enterprise ideas.

Approximately half of the program is spent on our breaking news desk on overnights, documenting and explaining Chicago street crime, so an interest in that topic is a must. Reporters on this shift gain valuable skills including determining which stories to chase, publishing directly to the website, interviewing people in stressful situations, and expanding their photo and video skills.

The other half of the residency is spent on the metro desk, writing daily and enterprise stories on a wide variety of topics.

On occasion, college graduates with at least three strong daily newspaper internships also may be given consideration.

Applicants should send a cover letter, resume, PDFs of writing clips and the names of at least three professional references to EDJPA@chicagotribune.com.  Please use “Resident Reporter” in the subject line.
