Title of Position: Full-Time Digital News Writer/Editor

Title of Immediate Supervisor:  Editor-in-Chief

Department:  WFED Programming

Location: 3400 Idaho Ave, NW, Washington, D.C.

Hours: Fulltime

FLSA Status: Non-exempt (hourly)

Closing Date: ongoing


Position Objective:  Contribute daily, across all media platforms, to make Federal the leading provider of timely and relevant news and information about the people, policies and programs of the federal government. Contribute to the understanding of how the human resources, technology, financial management and acquisition policies affect federal managers and contractors. Understand and demonstrate the station's mission statement though your story selection and article writing. Develop enterprise news sources for original news content for online and potentially on air. Edit original articles for publication on the website. Organize and manage content on Engage with Federal News Radio users through various social media outlets such as Twitter, Facebook and LinkedIn and bring new ideas to the table.    




  • 1-3 years reporting/writing/editing experience
  • Proficiency in WordPress, Photoshop, basic HTML
  • Proven ability to find and develop news sources
  • Ability to write in a clear, concise fashion on deadline and in an accurate and timely manner
  • Ability to thrive in fast-paced, breaking news situations
  • Attention to detail with content, including grammar, punctuation and fact checking
  • Understanding of social media and its relationship with news consumers, online marketing and web traffic
  • Flexibility in work schedule
  • Work in compliance with company policies and procedures
  • Maintain a positive and cooperative rapport with staff, management and clients
  • Project an appropriate professional appearance and demeanor
  • Experience covering the people, programs, and policies of the federal government
  • Degree in Journalism, Communications or related field
  • 1-2 years broadcast news experience
  • Knowledge of Burli (or other newsroom operating systems), ENCO (or other automation software), and Adobe Audition (or other audio editing software)
  • Ability to communicate in English both verbally and in writing.
  • Manual dexterity and fine motor skills to manipulate computer keys and general office equipment (telephone, copier, calculator, etc.) for extended periods of time.
  • Ability to hear and speak clearly and follow both oral and written direction.
