The Atchison (Kansas) Globe is reopening its search for an energetic and well-rounded journalist to lead print and digital efforts for the Globe (2,300-circulation twice-weekly, published Wednesday and Saturday mornings) and, the community portal website owned and operated by the newspaper.

The successful candidate will lead by example on a three-member staff and will be a strong producer of timely and locally relevant content -- both the important news stories that can be found every week and the many feature stories so expected from a community-focused news organization.

This position will be titled managing editor and carry additional responsibilities for guiding the staff and its development, particularly in adding digital skills. The managing editor also is responsible for close coordination of efforts with editors in the News-Press Now converged newsroom based at the St. Joseph (Missouri) News-Press. Atchison and St. Joseph are situated about 20 miles apart; the media properties are under the common ownership of News-Press & Gazette Co.

Design and production of Globe pages is handled through the Design Hub at the News-Press. Content produced by the Globe staff is shared with News-Press Now platforms, including the daily News-Press, the community portal website and three broadcast television stations – FOX 26 KNPN, NBC 21 KNPG and CBS 30 KCJO – that serve a regional audience from St. Joseph.

All new staff members are given the tools and training required to grow their skills and to become equally adept at reporting for print, the web and TV platforms. Video and prompt posting to digital platforms are considered standard components of our work.

NPG’s vision is to be the dominant provider of local news and information for the markets we serve. For the news staff, this means a focus on highly competitive local coverage that places particular value on uniquely relevant and interesting enterprise reporting. We invite candidates who share these interests.

Position requirements

We prefer a college degree with a concentration in multimedia journalism and three to five years of practical experience, including instances of demonstrated leadership. Candidates with lesser experience will be considered. Midwest candidates are strongly preferred.

Core requirements include a commitment to journalism and multimedia news reporting; ability to learn new skills; understanding of journalism ethics, press law and the competitive aspects of daily reporting; and ability to do good work on deadline. A valid driver’s license and a safe driving record also are required. Employment is contingent on passage of a drug screening and a background check.

Prospective candidates should make their interest known as soon as possible. To apply, send a brief letter of introduction, current resume, names of three references, and examples of your best work.
