Title: Newsletter and Supplements Editor

Department/Division: Editorial Department/Marketing & Communications Division

Supervisor: Editorial Director

Summary of duties: Performs substantive editing and copyediting of content in all Associations Now print and digital channels. Oversees and tracks editorial team’s beat coverage and maintains own beat coverage of assigned topic areas for members-only newsletter. Manages editorial and advertorial content production for supplements and special sections. Writes magazine content as assigned. Contributes to development of synergies among ASAE content vehicles.

Specific Responsibilities Include:

Bimonthly print magazine and supplements

  • Serves as lead editor on Associations Now magazine features and departments.
  • Serves as lead editor on editorial and advertorial supplements and manages production in coordination with advertising department and external design/production consultant.
  • Writes department articles as assigned.
  • Assists with copyediting and proofreading during Associations Now production.

Digital editorial content

  • Copyedits staff-, freelance-, and volunteer-written articles for ASAE website; ensures that articles meet editorial and web standards (e.g., stylistic consistency, usefulness, SEO).
  • Assists with editing daily news and blogs published on
  • Covers 4-6 topic beats as assigned, generally producing one
  • story in each beat every month. Coordinates with multiple ASAE volunteer groups to maintain regular contributions for print and web.
  • Manages schedule for posting articles on ASAE website and works closely with web content editor to ensure timely and accurate posting.
  • Provides social media posts and blurbs highlighting editorial content for ASAE social and email marketing channels.


  • In conjunction with editor-in-chief, oversees editorial beat system to ensure adequate coverage of major subject matter areas of interest to readers.
  • Serves as primary editorial contact with volunteer relations team to ensure effective communication and cooperation with section council volunteers regarding content development.
  • Gathers material from other ASAE departments (e.g., learning, meetings) to provide article ideas; distributes leads to beat editors for development.
  • Participates in editorial and art/design brainstorming.
  • Develops and maintains a professional network of colleagues and members by attending ASAE and other association industry programs.
  • Performs other duties as assigned.

Position Requirements:

  • College degree in journalism, communications, or related field preferred.
  • Five to seven years’ experience in fast-paced editorial and/or communications environments, with heavy emphasis on substantive editing, copy editing, and editorial project management.
  • Association experience preferred.
  • Excellent writing, editing, and proofreading skills.
  • Working knowledge of content management systems, HTML, and email delivery platforms desirable.
  • Ability to balance multiple priorities, work independently and as part of a team, keep others informed through clear written and oral communication, and maintain a high level of productivity.
  • Ability to think strategically and take initiative in planning for the magazine, website, and other products of the editorial department.
  • Superior attention to detail, strong organizational skills, enough flexibility and creativity to help make midstream adjustments to achieve the goal of producing timely, high-quality editorial products.
