Title: Staff Writer

Department/Division: Editorial Department/Marketing & Communications Division

Supervisor: Editorial Director

Summary of duties: Writes news, blogs, features, sections/departments, and other content for Associations Now, AssociationsNow.com, supplements, and other editorial products as assigned. Maintains beat coverage of assigned topic areas, including developing and editing content by volunteer contributors for member newsletter. Contributes to development of synergies among ASAE content vehicles.

Specific Responsibilities Include:

  • Pitches relevant story ideas and contributes two to three news stories per week to AssociationsNow.com.
  • Writes weekly Money & Business blog on AssociationsNow.com.
  • Writes features, sections, and other items as assigned for Associations Now magazine (bimonthly).
  • Serves as beat editor in specific subject areas -
  • Writes monthly articles in beats (and other subjects as assigned) and/or coordinates with ASAE volunteer groups to maintain regular contributions for print and web.
  • Edits articles for beats written by volunteer contributors.
  • Assists with copyediting and proofreading during production of Associations Now and supplements.
  • Participates in editorial and art/design brainstorming meetings.
  • Develops and maintains a professional network of colleagues and members by attending ASAE and other association industry programs.
  • Performs other duties as assigned.

Position Requirements:

  • College degree in journalism, communications, or related field.
  • Three to five years of editorial experience as a writer/editor for a print magazine and/or website; experience with daily beat coverage and blogging desirable.
  • Association experience preferred.
  • Excellent writing, editing, and proofreading skills.
  • Ability to balance multiple priorities, work independently and as part of a team, keep others informed through clear written and oral communication, and maintain a high level of productivity.
  • Experience with various content distribution and social channels. Familiarity with data visualization, quiz, and video tools desirable.
  • Superior attention to detail, strong organizational skills, enough flexibility and creativity to help make midstream adjustments to achieve the goal of producing timely, high-quality editorial products.
  • Some travel is required.
