Description:

The Palladium-Times, the only daily newspaper in Oswego County, is looking for two reporters, one to cover local news and features and the other to cover local sports. Both positions are currently open.

We’re a six-day-a-week, 5,300-circulation newspaper specializing in local news that our readers can’t find elsewhere. Candidates need to be comfortable writing a variety of stories each day.

Descriptions of each job are posted below:

News reporter

Very rarely is there a slow day in our newsroom. For our reporters, it’s not unusual to cover county court in the morning, interview sources for a feature story in the afternoon, and top the day off with a city or county meeting that night. We’re busy rounding up all the local news we can each day and sharing it quickly and accurately with our readers.

While the available position has an established beat, the area offers countless opportunities for reporters to chase articles outside their set responsibilities. Two local nuclear plants are frequently in the news, and the Port of Oswego Authority and two local colleges are fountains for story ideas. We’re looking for someone who is eager to cover established news topics, but also someone who wants to find fresh story ideas.

Reporters are largely responsible for finding their own stories to report and for keeping up with all news on their respective beats. The ideal candidate will be a self-starter, someone who is hungry to learn all they can about local government and schools and the people who make up Oswego County.

Experience preferred, but not required. Experience with photography a plus.

Interested candidates can forward resumes and three-to-five clips to apoole@palltimes.com.

Sports reporter

Our award-winning sports department frequently moves beyond simple game coverage, instead providing our readers with the stories and backgrounds of the players and coaches on the field.

We specialize in local sports coverage, and the next sports reporter can expect to cover a wide range of athletics, from high school baseball and football games to college hockey and basketball and the hugely popular local auto racing scene.

We’re looking for a candidate who is eager to dive in to the local sports scene and is enthusiastic about the chance to cover athletics, but also eager to push news and sports stories on our website and using social media.

Photography and page layout experience a plus but not required.

Please send your resume and several clips to mleboeuf@palltimes.com.
