The California Health Report, an independent non-profit journalism project, is seeking freelance health reporters.

We cover health and health policy, and are particularly interested in stories about disenfranchised populations, including people of color, those who are low-income, the elderly and those who live in rural California.

We cover the entire state and often write about health disparities that occur in parts of California, or among certain populations—and we investigate possible solutions.

We also feature timely stories on health policy and legislative actions, with a focus on how those decisions will affect Californians.

Other topics we cover include environmental health, children’s health, public health, and violence and justice.

Writers must live in California and have at least two years of health reporting experience. Copy must be clean and submitted on time; typically deadlines are one to two weeks from the assigning date. Writers are paid per story and the pay is competitive.

Send a story pitch, resume and links to three published stories that focus on health in California to
