The Aspen Daily News, a seven-day-per-week paper dedicated to excellence in local journalism in Aspen, Colorado, seeks a night editor. This position encompasses editing, writing and newspaper layout skills and serves as the nexus between production and editorial staff. Must be detail oriented and self motivated, committed to overseeing the final product each night. A journalism background with a knack for headline writing and knowledge of AP style, as well as proficiency with inDesign are prerequisite skills. Essential duties are: 

    • Editing and curating letters to the editor and opinion columns. 

    • Select AP wire stories to fill state, national, world and sports sections.

    • Copy edit all local stories, headlines and photo captions after receiving budget from news editor. 

    • Layout all editorial content — local stories and photos, opinion page and wire stories and photos — via inDesign. Eye for clean newspaper design and knowledge of inDesign software are a must.

    • Write and edit headlines as needed to fit space.

    • Read everything again, making changes on the page to ensure mistake-free editions. 

    • Attention to detail such as folios, page numbers, dates, jumps.

    • Create pdf pages, conduct a final proof.

    • Send to press within expected timeframe, ensuring they have received paper and are set to print.

    • Upload local news and opinion content to website.

    • Creatively troubleshoot on deadline any computer, server, website or software issues that arise.

    • Contribute a feature story every five to six weeks as well as contribute to the arts and entertainment section on a similar rotating schedule for personal travel and gear review essays.

The night editor comes in mid afternoon and stays until the press has the paper, typically a seven- to eight-hour shift. Much of the work is done after the rest of the staff has gone home, but you are a critical part of the team who will be communicating throughout with reporters, editors, graphic designers, production managers and the press.
