General Description:    
Pacific Lutheran University seeks a sharp communicator who knows how to develop, write and package compelling stories across multiple media platforms, including print, web, social and video. Equally important is demonstrated skill in packaging and pitching stories to local, regional, national and international media. The Assistant Director of Media and Content also assists with web communications and social-media campaigns and manages long- and short-term projects for a diverse range of campus constituencies. The successful candidate will be constantly on the lookout for storytelling opportunities and innovative ways to tell them. We’re looking for a utility player who feels equally comfortable writing for news, brand communications and persuasive copywriting projects, and who thrives in a fast-moving, deadline-driven, team-oriented environment. Reports to the Executive Director of Content Development.

Essential Functions and Responsibilities:    
Communications Strategy, Management and Outreach: 
•   Work in collaboration with Marketing & Communication leadership to develop and implement a proactive media strategy (planning, execution and outreach) including, but not limited to, the following:
•   Develop and cultivating relationships with regional, national and international media.
•   Pitch story ideas to reporters and producers.
•   Work with reporters on their story ideas related to PLU strategic priorities and manage press calls to ensure reporters receive prompt and accurate information.
•   Ensure appropriate infrastructure is in place to support media relations efforts, e.g. updated and accurate media lists, contact information, and materials.
•   Write or oversee the writing of newsletter, media advisories and news releases, op-eds, blog posts, fact sheets and other materials used for public dissemination.
•   Support the development of background materials, briefings, Q&As, talking points, media analysis and other collateral material as needed to support PLU’s communications efforts.
•   Provide crisis and issues-management communications support as needed.
Digital Media:
•   Record, edit, and produce official university podcast series for online distribution. Make sure all relevant resources, from news items to guests, are sourced before recording.
•   Manage the content for the front page of the PLU website.
•   Serve as a resource on the latest in digital media that could be incorporated into PLU communications efforts.
•   Serve as secondary support on social media efforts for PLU.
Publications Production:
•   Copyedit, proofread, and revise a variety of communication vehicles across campus.
•   Develop concepts for an array of marketing publications for university clients; work with Admission to produce relevant marketing materials, magazines, brochures, and other publications.
•   Manage multiple, simultaneous long-term projects from conception to delivery, including content creation, collaboration, design review and proofreading.
•   Other duties as assigned.

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:    
•   Strong interpersonal and organizational skills and the ability to work independently and as part of a tight-knit team.
•   Confidence with AP style and excellent attention to detail and accuracy in an environment with frequent interruptions.
•   Ability to resolve problems and to develop relevant alternatives and recommendations.
•   Experience with web publishing software; WordPress highly desired. 
•   Working knowledge of photography, graphic design and video.

Required Qualifications:    
•    Bachelor’s degree in Journalism, Public Relations or related field.
•    Five years of experience in Journalism, Public Relations or related field.
•    Demonstrated written communication skills across platforms, from news releases to social media posts.
•    Experience with securing coverage from national, regional and local media.
•    Finalist candidates must satisfactorily complete pre-employment background check.

Preferred Qualifications:    
•    Knowledge and understanding of web content creation, editing and maintenance using web-publishing tools.
•    Eight to ten years of progressively responsible experience in a professional communications setting.
•    Knowledge of Microsoft Word and Excel, Adobe Creative Suite (including Audition), Final Cut Pro and Photoshop.
