The Office of Communication Services at Duke University seeks a journalist who tells compelling stories in different formats. This curious individual is a resourceful communicator who will contribute journalistic skills on any given day in support of Duke’s programs and initiatives. Duke is the size of a small city, and this excellent writer will help cover it: One day, the individual may write about the construction of a new campus building and the next day, the individual could be examining data on health trends to write a cover story for the award-winning employee print publication. The writer is a self-starter who consistently generates relevant story ideas and well-crafted and engaging stories for print and online. The writer is also adept at shooting and editing short news videos and using social media.

About the Office of Communication Services:

Duke’s Office of Communication Services manages Duke’s primary communications platforms for employees and supports the communication needs for Human Resources, Parking and Transportation, Police, Sustainability, and other central areas. The office produces the “Working@Duke” section on Duke Today, the university’s flagship news website, as well as the award-winning print publication, Working@Duke. The office also manages Twitter, Facebook, and YouTube accounts as part of the “Working@Duke” portfolio.

Work performed:

  • Write short and long form print and online stories about benefits, programs and services for Duke’s 37,000 employees, as well stories for the broad Duke community (70-80%)
  • Create video stories as standalone features or to complement written pieces (20-30%).
  • Conduct research and interviews as part of original reporting for print and digital content.
  • Take photographs.
  • Contribute posts and help monitor Working@Duke’s employee-focused social media accounts.
  • Create communication plans and develop materials to support specific needs as directed.
  • Work collaboratively with a team of experienced communication professionals to achieve common goals.
  • Develop and maintain professional contacts and affiliations with colleagues within Duke’s central administration and communication offices throughout Duke, including the Office of News and Communications.
  • Perform other related duties incidental to the work described herein.


  • Excellent reporter, writer and communicator
  • Adept at interviewing and journalistic story structure elements, including “ledes” and “nut graphs”
  • Familiar with AP style
  • Skilled at non-linear video editing applications such as iMovie or Final Cut X
  • Comfortable with social media and technology
  • Committed to accuracy and high standards
  • Self-starter who is flexible and enjoys challenges
  • Generates interesting, creative and relevant story ideas on a consistent basis
  • Highly collaborative team member
  • Desire to continuously learn and improve
  • Ability to effectively manage multiple projects simultaneously and under competing deadlines
  • Takes initiative and works independently on complex topics to meet multiple deadlines in a fast-paced environment


  • Bachelor's degree, preferably in journalism
  • At least two to three years of daily deadline newspaper experience
