The regional reporter position here is new in our recently reorganized beat structure, responsible for getting out and about in our market – a six-county spread – to tell stories wherever they may lead. Yes, we have stories: abject poverty, the decline of the coal industry, shrinking populations that are leading to contentious school consolidations, educational outcomes, environmental concerns in a region reliant upon extraction industries, nascent farm-to-table ag enterprises and a culture that is up to its armpits in religion, music, food and the ways of old – no matter what holler you call home.
We emphasize breaking news, enterprise and investigative reporting. Not only do we publish to a daily newspaper and website, we produce a magazine that was just named the best in our company of over 100 newspapers. We want journalists who are curious and well sourced, and who can see a story – and write it.
West Virginia is a fascinating place, with journalism gold in these hills – our backyard. We are a half-day's drive from major population centers in the Midwest and the East Coast, and right here at home we have snow skiing and outdoor recreation like few places on Earth.
Recent college graduates are encouraged to apply.
