Bethesda Magazine is looking for an experienced, talented and dynamic managing editor to lead our editorial operations, and to develop and edit the magazine’s content. Bethesda Magazine is a successful and fast growing bi-monthly magazine that is committed to high-quality community journalism and to providing a collaborative and supportive work environment for its employees.

Responsibilities of the job include:

  • Running the editorial department, which regularly produces 180+ edit pages per issue.
  • Planning all editorial content, including cover sections, long-form features and consumer service content on such topics as home design, travel and dining.
  • Generating and assigning stories to freelance writers.
  • Helping choose photos and approving layouts; writing headlines, decks and captions; and working with the online team on any web components.
  • Editing dozens of stories per issue. Helping writers shape complicated stories into compelling long-form magazine features by addressing big picture issues (such as structure and character development) as well as details (such as grammar and consistency).
  • Overseeing editorial workflow—assigning stories several months in advance, setting and enforcing deadlines, and shepherding the magazine through its week-long proofing process each issue.
  • Promoting stories by using social media tools such as Twitter and Facebook.
  • Supervising an editorial staff that includes editors, writers and interns.
  • Managing the magazine’s annual editorial budget.

Qualified candidates must:

  • Have at least seven years’ experience as an editor of a consumer magazine.
  • Have experience and success recruiting freelance writers.
  • Have significant experience coming up with story ideas and packages.
  • Have significant experience editing long-form narrative stories.
  • Have at least five years’ experience managing editorial copy flow and an editorial staff.
  • Have experience working closely with an art department.
  • Be a talented headline writer.
  • Be an experienced user of InCopy.
  • Be an experienced and creative user of social media in a professional setting.
