Company: Daily Inter Lake
Cover Glacier National Park, Montana politics
and more
Kalispell, Montana
Job Status:  Full-time
Salary:  Not Specified

The Daily Inter Lake in Kalispell, Mont., is losing our senior reporter after 22 years. We have an opening by the end of this month for a multi-talented reporter who can write compelling features on assignment, but also will cover three important beats — natural resources, Kalispell, and statewide politics.

Yep, natural resources in Northwest Montana. That means Glacier National Park, the Bob Marshall Wilderness, Jewel Basin, and Flathead Lake among many local treasures. This reporter works closely with our features editor to develop compelling packages for front-page and feature-page positions throughout the week. In addition, you will cover the Kalispell City Council and other stories coming out of the Kalispell community, plus find time to develop stories on legislative and gubernatorial agendas of local interest. Strong interest in outdoors activities is a plus.

The ideal applicant will be able to generate stories, as well as work on assignment; write to length easily, whether turning in a pithy brief, a short feature, or a meaty explanatory piece. If you have additional skills, such as photopgraphy or page design, that can only help. The senior reporter may also be asked to sit on the editorial board. Multi-tasking is vital in our industry these days.

The Inter Lake is a 17,000 circulation paper in Northwest Montana. We are located next to Glacier National Park and also have two ski resorts and many lakes in the area. Because we are a vacation destination, we have many amenities and amusements not typical of small towns. Our news team consists of 17 people who are dedicated to turning out a professional product day after day at the highest standard.

We would like to see applications from all qualified journalists regardless of what you did in your current or last job. Tell us what makes you the perfect person to be the next star in our newsroom. Our preference is to have you e-mail a cover letter with your salary requirements, your resume and relevant work samples to Managing Editor Frank Miele at Sorry, but we can only contact the top few applicants to discuss the jobs in detail. Thanks.
