The Dallas Morning News is seeking a Photo Editor. This position will be responsible for ensuring that its digital publications are visually striking and informative through the use of photos and videos and other forms of communications, placing images on an equal footing with words as a communication device.




1.       Edits staff, freelance, wire and other photos for the newspaper, online and elsewhere, ensuring that the images used meet the department’s standards for quality, accuracy and taste.

2.       Protects the photographer’s vision in those images by following them through to publication.

3.       Provides direction to photographers and others on the photo staff in both daily content creation and on journalistic, visual, logistical and ethical issues.

4.       Works with the photography staff in brainstorming visual ideas, finding creative solutions to news and feature assignments.

5.       Works with photographers to get their story ideas accepted and published in various sections of the paper.

6.       Acts as liaison with originating departments that will further strengthen the value of the visual image in the newsroom.

7.       Educates others about the power and impact of the visual report and to ensure that situations are created to record strong, storytelling images.

8.       Ensures and maintains a proper workflow.

9.       Coordinates photo assignments and assigns staff and freelance photographers to assignments.

10.    Occasionally handles special photo assignments (out of town/country) hiring freelancers in other locations or arranging coverage with news agencies such as The Associated Press.

11.    Build slideshows, post pictures and videos to the blogs, tweet, and post to Facebook.

12.    Manage scheduling, photography and video equipment for the photographers

13.    Provide photographic training for the newsroom.

14.    Perform other duties as needed.




Bachelor’s degree in photojournalism, journalism or a related filed. An equivalent combination of education and experience may be substituted.


Three to five years photography and/or photo editing experience required.


Current and comprehensive knowledge of and ability to operate the latest Canon digital camera technology, knowledge of lighting, Macintosh desktop and laptop computers, transmitting via FTP, Internet and social media skills.
