Company: Atlantic Media
Editor – The Next America
Washington, District of Columbia
Job Status:  Not Specified
Salary:  Not Specified

National Journal seeks an editor for its groundbreaking Next America project. The ideal candidate will be deeply immersed in digital journalism and social media – an editor with a keen understanding of the web and social media and how to use them both to build a loyal digital audience.

Background: Our country is changing rapidly: a financial crisis has reshaped our economy; massive demographic shifts will turn the United States into a minority-majority country by 2043; and technology is transforming every aspect of our lives, from how we learn to how we work to how long and how well we live. The Next America explores the challenges of a new day – in particular, how growing diversity is changing the national agenda, on issues from education, the economy and health care to politics and immigration. It includes a digital hub, national and regional events, print supplements to National Journal magazine, and polling.

Position Description: The editor will be responsible for producing – and building an audience for – high-quality, high-impact journalism on the changing face of America. The editor will work closely with existing Next America writers and editors and will assist in hiring additional writers as we build out a team and dramatically expand Next America’s reach. The ideal candidate will have a track record of creating excellent journalism that drives substantial traffic – journalism that attracts readers because it tells an important story incredibly well. The candidate will have an eye for gripping personal stories that show how the new demographic realities are transforming the nation’s institutions – and the way Americans live their daily lives. In addition, the ideal candidate will have an innate understanding of the web and of social media—how to write, edit and package stories so they have the best chance of reaching the intended audience. And the ideal editor will have strong line-editing skills, a deep interest in policy and politics, and a firm commitment to producing journalism that comports with the highest ethical standards.
