Description:

The Telegraph, a newspaper serving readers in Middle Georgia, has an opening for a K-12 education/ night public safety reporter.

This reporter will be responsible for covering K-12 education in growing Houston County as well as Peach County, seeking a balance of hard news and feature stories for digital and print publication. The successful candidate will be expected to collaborate with the Bibb County education reporter on regional and trend stories such as teacher accountability, student achievement and discipline. This reporter also will be responsible for public safety coverage at night for the Middle Georgia region, including making night police calls and establishing good communication with day cops and courts reporters and editors. Occasional general assignment work is to be expected.

Previous reporting experience, a proven ability to write enterprise and spot news, and knowledge of AP style and grammar are required. Previous beat or education reporting experience is a plus. This reporter should also be able to build a network of sources and understand how to get information through open records requests. The ability to understand and analyze budgets is also a plus. Multimedia skills, including shooting and editing video, as well as social media skills are of growing importance in The Telegraph newsroom.

A college degree is required. Hours will be flexible to accommodate K-12 coverage, but hours generally will be 11-8 p.m.
