Job Description

First, you have the sensibility of a journalist who wants to dive deep into advancing news and storytelling on digital platforms. Second, you are a front-end developer with a very strong design background. As the newsroom’s interactive designer, you will not only prototype, develop and improve digital news and storytelling approaches, you will also act as a web/digital design guru and counselor who can help establish, deploy and uphold quality design and Seattle Times’ style standards no matter the project or platform.




  • Hands-on developer with deep experience in visual presentation and information design
  • Ability to develop new approaches to digital storytelling and internal processes
  • Command of modern UI conventions, touch-driven navigation and responsive design techniques
  • Strong leadership skills
  • Ability to work on deadline and comfortable with rapid iteration of products (scrum/agile preferred)
  • Can effectively multi-task and balance multiple priorities at once
  • Strong collaborator and ability to build consensus among stakeholders
  • JavaScript; HTML/CSS; JQuery; WordPress; LESS/Sass; Responsive design techniques; Git
  • Basic understanding of: Modernizr, Boilerplate, Bootstrap, ZURB and other foundational frameworks; OpenStreetMap, Leaflet

Bachelor’s Degree in journalism, visual journalism, computer science or related discipline and 5 years of experience or equivalent at a multi-platform news organization. Experience in cross-functional teams is desired; project management experience preferred.
