The Berkshire Record, a weekly broadsheet based in western Massachusetts, is seeking a general assignment reporter who is energetic, organized, self-motivated and able to work quickly and accurately on deadline.
The position includes covering towns and their governments, writing analytical enterprise pieces, covering spot news, writing engaging features, producing in-depth stories on issues and institutions, and writing the “rest of the story”.
The ideal candidate must have the ability to distill complex subjects into understandable, accessible elements and juggle multiple assignments. Empathy, toughness and ability to be a good listener are musts.
Two to three years' prior experience as a reporter is preferred, but will consider more recent college graduates with newspaper experience, particularly those who had served as an editor of their college newspaper. Candidate must possess basic photography skills, have a good camera, a car and know AP style.
The Berkshires, 2 1/2 hours from New York and Boston, is in an area filled with arts, music, (Tanglewood) dance (Jacob’s Pillow), skiing (two nearby areas), lakes and hiking (the Appalachian Trail). Great Barrington was named the best small town in America by the Smithsonian magazine last year.
