Description:

The Western News, a twice-weekly newspaper in Libby, Mont., is seeking a reporter who can do it all, with a particular focus on project/enterprise reporting. The successful candidate must demonstrate an ability to navigate small-town politics, meet deadlines and produce daily news quickly when necessary - while finding time to complete in-depth projects on a regular basis.

Multimedia expertise also would be a big plus.

The open position is for a general assignment reporter, although the successful candidate will have a couple of specific beats that will be determined based on the candidate's skills and particular interests. Above all, however, we are looking for someone who has the desire and talent to cover big stories that require thorough research and a highly analytical writing style.

We live in one of the most cantankerous small towns in the U.S., where there is never a shortage of hard-hitting news. We are home to the deadliest Superfund site in the nation. Thirteen years after journalists uncovered the true danger of amphibole asbestos that was once mined near Libby, the EPA is still spending millions of dollars every year to remove the toxic material from the homes and businesses in our area. If that scares you, then you probably shouldn't apply. But if that sounds like a great story to cover, you might be the right person for this job.

The Western News' coverage area, which includes the northwest corner of Montana, offers more than two million acres of public lands for outdoor recreation. The Kootenai National Forest has hundreds of miles of hiking trails and many scenic places to camp with wildflowers and huckleberries nearby. High-mountain lakes, miles of streams and the Kootenai River appeal to anglers of all sorts. It's a great area for hunting deer, elk, moose and bear. We also have a top-notch downhill ski area, as well as miles of backcountry roads for cross-country skiing and snowmobiling.

Our entire staff - even the ad reps - is committed to quality journalism. Our editor is an industry veteran with ink in his veins. Our publisher grew up on the editorial side of this business and understands the resources needed to produce award-winning stories. They've won numerous state, regional and national awards for journalism excellence, and they want to help the reporting staff achieve similar success.

If it bleeds, it ledes. If it's a meeting story, it's probably going on page B7. If you can get on board with that philosophy, we'd like to hear from you.

To apply, send a resume, three of your best writing clips and any other material that illustrates your abilities to Matt at mbunk@thewesternnews.com or The Western News, 311 California Ave., Libby, MT 59923. Phone calls are OK if you have something particularly interesting to say about yourself or the job opportunity. Otherwise, please just stick to email or snail mail.
