Description: The Tuscaloosa News, winner of the 2012 Pulitzer Prize for breaking news reporting, is seeking a general assignment reporter, although the right candidate could be considered for the higher education or business beats. We are looking for an energetic, self-starter who can produce six to seven stories a week for print and the web, as well as occasional in-depth feature and investigative pieces. This reporter must possess excellent writing skills, including the ability to write clearly and accurately under deadline pressure, be adept with social media and be willing to work nights and weekends on occasion. We are looking for someone, as well, who will be tenacious in fulfilling our role as government watchdog. Assignments could involve traveling anywhere within our 10-county coverage area in west-central Alabama, or beyond, so a driver’s license, reliable transportation and automobile insurance would be required. At least two to three years of daily newspaper experience is preferred, but we will consider recent college graduates with strong internship or college newspaper experience, or others with commensurate experience in journalism. Tuscaloosa is home to the University of Alabama, Stillman College and Shelton State Community College, and its economy has consistently out-performed state and national averages. Send cover letter, resume and your best clips to City Editor Ken Roberts, The Tuscaloosa News, P.O. Box 20587, Tuscaloosa, AL 35402-0587 or ken.roberts@tuscaloosanews.com. No phone calls, please.
